Etanercept and infliximab were evaluated for their use in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF), but the studies were terminated early due to lack of efficacy. One of the studies actually suggested a higher mortality rate in patients with CHF who received treatment with etanercept. In addition, there have been case reports describing new onset CHF in patients receiving etaner-cept who had no previous symptoms and were under the age of 50. Physicians should proceed with caution when prescribing etanercept for patients with a history of heart failure.
