Dietary Recommendations for the Prevention of Cancer

It is assumed that compliance with dietary recommendations will lead to the largest possible decrease in the incidence of cancer within the population. In addition, dietary recommendations give each and everyone the chance to lower the personal risk of cancer. Adhering to these recommendations does not ensure definitive protection; it only reduces the average probability of developing the disease. On the other hand, even the most severe violations will not necessarily result in cancer.

The recommendations have been compiled by the World Cancer Research Fund International (WCRF International) in such a way that they take into consideration all important dietary risk factors for cancer worldwide. They largely agree with the recommendations for the prevention of other chronic diseases, and most of them are identical to the recommendations of the German Society of Nutrition (Table 8.6).
