The function of the receptor on many of these cells is not established.
Each FceRI molecule is composed of an a chain that binds the Fc region of IgE and a p chain and two y chains that are responsible for signaling (Fig. 19-3). The amino-terminal extracellular portion of the a chain includes two Ig-like domains that form the binding site for IgE. The
P chain of FceRI contains a single immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif (ITAM) in the cytoplasmic carboxyl terminal domain. The two identical y chain polypeptides are linked by a disulfide bond and are homologous to the Z chain of the T cell antigen receptor complex (see Chapter 7).
