The Treatment of Hyponatremia

When pronounced hyponatremia develops (serum sodium concentration under, say, 125 mEq per liter) and persists more than overnight, it is worth treating by the simple measure of fluid restriction. The reason this works, albeit slowly, is that water loss by evaporation through the skin continues no matter what, at a rate of about a liter a day. So serum sodium concentration gradually comes up to normal. It is often sufficient merely to tell the patient to cut down on fluids, rather than to limit intake to some measured amount.
