5.05.2.7 Alcohol Dehydrogenases (ADHs)

ADHs, a subset of the medium-chain dehydrogenases/reductases,209 constitute a highly complex superfamily of widely distributed zinc containing cytosolic NAD + dependant enzymes that are presently divided into seven classes210 and numerous isozymes and allelic variants.211 While they can reversibly catalyze the oxidation of the alcohol/aldehyde redox pair in a variety of substrates, including ethanol,212 retinol,206 and other aliphatic alcohols,212 they function primarily as oxidative catalysts.
