Antigens

■ Hemidesmosomal proteins BPAgl (230 kDa) and BPAg2 (180 kDa, which is also known as collagen XVII)

Pathophysiology:

IgG antibodies bind to BP antigens and activate C3 and inflammatory mediators. Eotaxin, a chemokine, may recruit eosinophils to the basement membrane zone. Inflammatory cells release proteases at the basement membrane zone, and hemidesmosomal proteins are degraded, leading to blister formation.
