Biographies

Ahmed Elmarakby is a postdoctoral fellow in the Vascular Biology Center at the Medical College of Georgia. He earned his BSc degree in pharmacy from Mansoura University, Egypt in 1993 and he also received an MS degree in pharmacology from the same University in 1998. Dr Elmarakby joined the graduate program at the Medical College of Georgia in 2000 where he was awarded his PhD degree in pharmacology in 2004. After he received his PhD degree, he started his postdoctoral training in the Vascular Biology Center at the Medical College of Georgia. He has won many fellowships for his research in vascular and renal physiology such as American Heart Association Pre-Doctoral Fellowship and National Kidney Foundation Fellowship. He is currently holding an American Heart Association PostDoctoral Fellowship Award until 2007. Dr Elmarakby has authored many manuscripts related to hypertension and renal damage and his research area mainly focuses on the role of superoxide, endothelin, inflammatory cytokines, and epoxygenase metabolites in hypertension and renal diseases.

David M Pollock is a professor in the Vascular Biology Center at the Medical College of Georgia. He earned his BSc degree in biology from the University of Evansville in 1978 and a PhD in physiology in 1983 from the University of Cincinnati. Dr Pollock received his postdoctoral training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Early in his career he worked as a research investigator in the Drug Discovery Division of Abbott Laboratories for nearly seven years before moving to the Medical College of Georgia in 1995. Dr Pollock has over 100 peer-reviewed publications from his research on the renal mechanisms of hypertension with a focus on the role of endothelin, nitric oxide, and reactive oxygen species in the control of salt balance and vascular function. His research is currently funded by several grants from the National Institutes of Health and an Established Investigator Award from the American Heart Association.

John D Imig is a professor in the Vascular Biology Center at the Medical College of Georgia. He earned his BA degree in biology from Blackburn College in 1985 and a PhD in physiology and biophysics in 1990 from the University of Louisville. Dr Imig moved to the Medical College of Wisconsin for postdoctoral training and accepted a faculty position in the Department of Physiology at Tulane University in 1993. He moved to his current position at the Medical College of Georgia in 2001. He has won numerous awards for his research in vascular and renal physiology and currently holds an American Heart Association Established Investigator Award. The National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association have continuously funded Dr Imig's research since 1992. Dr Imig has authored numerous manuscripts related to the antihypertensive and renal and cardiovascular protective properties of angiotensin receptor antagonists, epoxygenase metabolites, and epoxide hydrolase inhibitors.
