Cation cell transporters

Several studies have been performed based on the finding that increased erythrocyte sodium-lithium counter transport may be seen in patients with essential hypertension. Many studies have been published in this area but with conflicting results. A few papers suggest that there may be an increased number of cation cell transporters in patients with complications or at risk of complications, but in other studies this has not been confirmed. There are also methodological problems, as described in several papers, and certainly at this time results on cations transporters need to be confirmed in more reliable and large-scale studies. So far, measurements can by no means be used as a reliable clinical biomarker [90-97].
