Taxonomic Comments

At present, Thiolamprovum pedioforme is the only representative of this genus. It was previously known as Amoebobacter pedioformis (Eichler and Pfennig, 1986). Sequence analyses of 16S rRNA genes have shown that Thiolamprovum pedioforme is genetically distant from Lamprocystis and Thiocapsa species (Guyoneaud et al., 1998b). Therefore, it has been transferred to Thiolamprovum pedioforme (Guyoneaud et al., 1998b).

Spherical to oval cells occur singly or in regular platelets of 4-16 cells. Individual cells 2 X 2-3 |m, nonmotile, and contain gas vesicles in peripheral parts of the cell. Color of cell suspensions pinkish red. Photosynthetic pigments are bacteriochlorophyll a and the carotenoids spirilloxanthin, anhydrorhodovibrin, rhodopin, and OH-spirilloxanthin.

Photolithoautotrophic growth with sulfide, thiosulfate,

Thiolamprovum and S0 as electron donors. In the presence of sulfide and bicarbonate, acetate, lactate, and pyruvate photoassimi-lated. Chemolithoautotrophic growth under microoxic conditions in the dark is possible with sulfide and thiosulfate as electron donors. Assimilatory sulfate reduction does not occur.

Mesophilic freshwater bacterium with optimum growth at 37°C and pH 7.4-7.6.

Habitat. freshwater and waste water ponds, type strain originates from a wastewater pond of a sugar factory.
