Enrichment and Isolation Procedures

L. modestohalophilus is widely distributed in microbial mats of shallow, warm, and saline water bodies (0.5-12% NaCl) with high sulfide content of the southern Crimea, the Donetsk region (Ukraine), and Turkmenia (former U.S.S.R.). Lamprobacterwas not found in the White Sea littoral zone.

When water and mud samples are inoculated into a medium containing 0.5-4% NaCl, 0.05% Na2S-9H20, 0.1% Na2S2O3-5H20, and 0.1% sodium acetate, bacteria containing gas vesicles are concentrated in the upper part of the culture vessel. This fraction is removed by using a sterile capillary and is transferred into agar dilution series, as described for the genus Lamprocystis.
