How can being in a wilderness program assist with recovery from substance abuse/chemical dependency?
There are many gifts that come from the adventure of being in a wilderness program, not the least of which is that it IS an adventure. Going into a more traditional recovery program, means that there is an adventure on an internal level, exploring parts of yourself you may not have been in touch with before, but being in a wilderness program like going on a journey of self-discovery, a pilgrimage, that is both internal and external. As you explore the wild and fascinating natural world in which you find yourself, you also explore the wild and fascinating world that lies within you. There is a kind of parallel process of discovery, each supporting and amplifying the other. Some basic elements that a good wilderness program offers include:
• “The wilderness effect” – in experiencing the beauty of the natural world participants have moments of true peace, joy, awe, gratitude (spiritual or meaningful experiences) for which drugs is often the false or temporary provider.
• Rite of Passage – we have so few meaningful rituals or ceremonies to mark important transition times. Wilderness programs are a powerful rite of passage, in which the individual is called on to shift from dependency to recognizing and relating from a place of interdependence, and from behaving as a child to acting as an adult.
• Improved self-esteem that naturally comes from meeting the challenges that are inherent in living outdoors, mastering the camping skills necessary to care for oneself and others in the group.
