Why Horses?

Equine TLC (Teaching Life skills for Change) is founded on the principle that, through working with horses, students can learn life skills that initiate change. All aspects of horses and horsemanship are used in the program, from bareback riding, to jumping, to barrel racing, to young horse training. Horsemanship skills are integrated with team building activities, experiential learning, and therapy groups to create a unique program with endless possibilities.

Aspen Ranch believes in experiential learning. Experiential learning means having an experience, and being able to process that experience, and gain knowledge from it. Eventually Aspen Ranch students will be able to apply these lessons to their daily lives at the ranch, and also transfer these lessons to their home environment when they leave. Experiential learning happens constantly on the ranch, whether the students are in school, at the barn, on the ropes course, or in their dormitories, they are continuously experiencing something, and processing the situation afterwards.

The unique environment of Aspen Ranch encourages a healthy balance between the development of group skills and focus on self. Learning how to interact appropriately with authority figures and to treat others with respect are key objectives at the Ranch. One of the distinguishing qualities of this program is the high ratio of staff to students, which is conducive to a strong sense of community and team building. This ratio also fosters sound interpersonal relationships as well as positive support systems. Personal accountability and responsibility to the group are balanced by challenging outdoor, ranch-type activities. These activities are designed to build self-esteem and motivation through the development of initiative, responsibility, and self-reliance. Through hard work, self-examination, and community building, the residents of Aspen Ranch are encouraged to develop a new, realistic sense of their talents and capabilities, to value the gifts of others, and to make meaningful contributions to those around them.

Hundreds of acres support horses, alfalfa, fence lines and pasturage, and a lake with excellent trout fishing. Students have chore rotations and work projects with their teams and gain hands-on ranch experience. This gives them not only an opportunity to gain a new skill but also a way to experience immediate natural and positive consequences of their actions.
