TEEN DEPRESSION
Some adolescents with clinical depression appear sad and lack energy, while others may seem agitated, irritable, and complain of such physical ailments as stomachaches and headaches. This mood disorder makes school performance and interpersonal relationships difficult and - in extreme form - may be life-threatening. Substance abuse and early pregnancy are additional risks. Antidepressant medication may be prescribed alone or with cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal forms of psychotherapy. Inpatient hospitalization may be necessary to prevent self-injury. Research indicates that depression often begins in early childhood and that approximately 2 percent of preteens and 4 to 8 percent of adolescents suffer from this disorder.
Aspen Education Group's schools and programs excel at finding an individualized plan for children and teens with depression. Behavior modification and therapy not only help with social behaviors, but they also can improve your child's academic performance. We have programs for children, teens, and young adults, ages 9 to 26.
